MEMBER ALERT - JUNE 1, 2015 - FRAUDULENT CHECK SCAM APPEARS IN OUR AREA
A recent "secret shopper" scam has been active in the area and has resulted in innocent individuals being held liable for deposits of large dollar checks which came to them unsolicited in the mail. If you get a check in the mail that you did not ask for and do not know the party from which it came, please call the bank or credit union to verify the check. If anyone asks you to "take a picture" of a bank or credit union check and send it to them, this is a major warning sign of attempted fraud.
Part of the scam involves forged bank or credit union checks which are mailed to random individuals across the country. If you attempt to deposit these checks, you could be held liable for any losses the financial institution suffers. In addition, if you sell an item online using sites such as Craig's List, be aware that you could be the victim of fraud if you accept a check for payment and don't verify funds. We have been working with law enforcement and other financial institutions to help protect our members from these kind of scams. CHICK-FIL-A BECOMES LATEST MERCHANT TO REPORT DATA BREACH - LOCAL BUSINESS ALSO HIT
The fast food chain Chick-Fil-A has reported a breach of their data systems exposing thousands of consumers financial information to cyber thieves. In addition, a local restaurant, Traditions, in Martinsburg, Pa., has also reported a breach of their systems. This local breach has resulted in the loss of thousands of dollars for small local credit unions and community banks who are solely responsible for reimbursing consumers, reissuing cards and tracking fraudulent transactions. We urge all members to write to their congressman and request legislation that would require merchants to accept their share of the financial responsibility for the lack of security that led to these losses.
KMART BREACH JOINS THE LIST OF HACKED PAYMENT SYSTEMS
In recent weeks we have noticed a rise in the number of Visa credit cards and MasterCard debit cards that have been reported as compromised by our card vendors security divisions. We have notified all of the cardholders who were affected and have replaced their cards. Please review your statements for any charges at Kmart and verify that they are legitimate charges. HOME DEPOT CONFIRMS DATA BREACH (September 8, 2014):
Home Depot has confirmed that a data breach occurred on their payment data systems in their stores in the United States and Canada and dates back to April 2014.
Home Depot is offering free services including credit monitoring, identity monitoring, and an identity theft insurance policy for anyone who shopped at a store since April 2014. Currently, they believe online shopping was not impacted. In addition Home Depot is stating that there is no evidence that debit card PINS were compromised. According to Krebs on Security, a massive amount of credit and debit card numbers went on sale on the black market September 2nd. Some news outlets estimate that as many as 60 million debit and credit card accounts were compromised. In addition, reports have mentioned that this is a variant of the same malware that caused the Target breach, affecting 40 million card numbers, in late 2013.
When we are notified of any of our credit or debit cardholders that may have been affected we will contact you and block/reissue your cards. In the meantime, please review your account statements for any errors by using our home banking system or in the case of VISA, by logging on to www.ezcardinfo.com. ATTENTION DEBIT/ATM CARDHOLDERS:
Effective August 18, 2014 you are now able to use your debit/ATM card in the state of Delaware for PIN based transactions. Anywhere you can input your personal identification number (PIN) is now approved. For example at ATM's for cash or any merchant where you can input your PIN number on a pin pad. Signature debit transactions are still declined in Delaware due to the high incidence of fraud emanating from that state.
